Interview with Judy Guess

Judy Guess is known around the world as a breeder of straight Egyptian Arabians of the highest quality, but she also has many other talents as well. We invite you to join us in learning more about Judy.

How did you first get started with horses?

The spirit, beauty and freedom of horses always attracted me. As far back as I can remember I wanted one, however growing up in an Air Force family and moving around constantly did not allow for pets, much less a horse. After graduation from college, though, my dream was realized. Even though my vision was of an Arabian horse, I didn't realize that I could actually own one! It was several years later that a "green broke" Arabian gelding was purchased. He taught me a lot and "sold" me on the breed.

What led you to the Egyptian Arabian?

After reading and studying Arabian books and magazines, it was evident that I was drawn to Egyptian Arabians. I wanted to become a "breeder" but I knew I had a lot more to learn. And, the learning never stops! My goal has been to produce exceptional breeding stock using artistic and critical evaluation of bloodlines, type and conformation. I was fortunate to have a marvelous foundation mare, Bint Atallah (Ruminaja Ali x AK Atallah), a jewel from Judy Jones' program. Through the years, my passion for Egyptian Arabians has been a driving force in my life........from photographing their unique spirit, riding and training my personal horses and awaiting the birth of a precious foal.

What do you think has enabled you to earn your reputation as one of the finest small breeders in the world?

As a passionate artist, dedicated breeder and photographer I sometimes look at the world differently. I'm able to see the balance and symmetry of a horse as well as recognizing

good conformation and type. I also believe in helping to educate newcomers and well as continuing education on the highest level. You should never stop learning and always "give back". My belief is that we are stewards of the breed and should study, act responsibly and above all, love our horses!

Tell us a bit about your life apart from the horses.

I graduated with a double major in Art and Education. My certifications are in Art, Vocational and Special Education and I've taught in those fields. I started working on a Master of Fine Arts at Sam Houston State University and have had several art exhibits with fellow artists.

Why were you attracted to work with Silver Maple?

Silver Maple Farm has a history of excellence: artistic advertising, topnotch bloodlines, and excellent presentations. Christie and Henry Metz have a philanthropic spirit and believe in "giving back". They give selflessly to what they believe in, as well as educating others and promoting the breed. Having been a teacher of Art, Vocational Education and Special Needs for 34 years, I have a similar philosophy. We also share a dedication to and passion for the Egyptian Arabian horse.
