1996 Egyptian Event
Supreme Champion Stallion

1998 Top Ten United States Futurity Colt

“If someone tells you that a horse leapt to the bottom of an abyss without injuring himself, ask what color he was, and if you are told bay, then believe it. The bay says to an argument, ‘Come no closer!’” Arab proverb.

In Memoriam 2010

“Henry and I saw Renegade for the first time at the 1996 Egyptian Event where he became Supreme Champion Stallion after winning his two-year-old class, then the Junior Colts championship,” says owner Christie Metz. “He was an incredible horse; so proud, very beautiful, and the first to win such a prestigious show at the Egyptian Event at such a young age. We went to the stalls where he was being managed by Eileen Verdieck to see him up close and then went home. We never stopped thinking about him.

“Later that fall we went to Michigan where he was at Bergren Farm to see him again with the idea of purchasing him to show. We decided he was a straight Egyptian horse that any Arabian breeder would appreciate for his many qualities. His breeder Kelly Chenoweth Bergren showed us his dam and her foundation mare, PH Safina, plus photos of the grandsire and grandam on both sides along with other siblings. This was very impressive, but most of all we loved his overall harmony. Renegade displayed true classic Arabian type — much like an old Vernet print, or Delacroix or Adam’s paintings. He had a way of tucking his chin to his chest and curving his neck when talking to you. He was definitely one of the most regal animals I have ever been around — he told you he was royalty and you had better acknowledge it!
“One of the first photo shoots we did with him as a mature stallion was with Gigi Grasso photographing and Darryl Larson videotaping. We placed Renegade on top of the earthen dike around our pond at the Naples, Florida, farm. Below him Henry was holding a young mare to tease him with. It worked well because his halter broke, allowing him to get loose. Of course he charged forward, cantering and heading toward Henry who was running as fast as he could toward the barn with the mare! Darryl Larson bravely stood her ground capturing some of the most dramatic footage of Renegade running directly at her with just a headstall on.

“Renegade was a great sire — a very consistent sire that you could count on giving you certain characteristics. He gave us many foals and all of them have that same balance, harmony with a smooth body and curving neck, chiseled heads and large eyes with beautiful expression. He is probably best known for his crosses on our mare Shaia and through her son Dreamcatcher SMF, who had a ten year career as a herd sire at Om El Arab International and has now moved to Haras De Cardenas in Santa Ynez, California. His granddaughter Om El Shadream gave Henry his first National Championship as an Amateur to Handle. We are small breeders so we have kept only two of his daughters; one is straight Egyptian, Rebel Rose SMF, and Bint Shaia out of Shaia is an example of the Egyptian/Spanish cross in Arabian blood lines. In addition we have some of his granddaughters to carry his line forward. He sired many sons, several of whom have gone to other breeders as far away as Saudi Arabia. We are fortunate to have one of his sons, Nightstar SMF, a full brother to Dreamcatcher SMF, here at our farm.

“Renegade was shown as a three-year-old in the Futurity class at the U.S. Nationals where he was named a Top Ten Futurity Stallion in the Halter Class.

“For the last six years at our farm in Santa Ynez, California, he lived outside next to all the mare paddocks. This way he could be true to his nature, a sentinel stallion. With such a big personality his paddock will seem a very different place being occupied by other horses. It is a very sad loss for all of us at Silver Maple.” Farewell Renny, our wish is for you to have green pastures filled with mares and the ability to race the wind and win!!
